WANDA JOHNSON "LIVE IN POLAND"
Wandę poznałam w dniu, w którym Barack Obama został po raz pierwszy wybrany na prezydenta USA. To był także początek naszej pierwszej wspólnej trasy koncertowej. Nie przypuszczałam wtedy, że siedemnaście lat i siedem tras później— z ósmą tuż za rogiem — będę pisać tekst do wydawnictwa towarzyszącego pierwszemu w karierze albumowi koncertowemu Wandy, nagranego… właśnie w Polsce.
Dla tych, którzy śledzą jej drogę od chwili, gdy po raz pierwszy postawiła stopę na polskiej ziemi tamtego listopadowego dnia w 2008 roku, nie będzie to zaskoczeniem. Od samego początku zdobywała tu serca fanów i przyjaciół, a z czasem przylgnęło do niej czułe przezwisko: Wandzia. Razem przemierzyłyśmy setki kilometrów, spędziłyśmy długie godziny w busach, przekraczając granice wielu europejskich krajów. Widziałam Wandę na scenie niezliczoną ilość razy — z różnymi zespołami, w salach małych i dużych, przed publicznością mówiącą w różnych językach. Jedno zawsze pozostaje niezmienne: gdziekolwiek się pojawi, Wanda porusza serca, przekraczając granice języka i kultury swoją muzyką i osobowością.
Urodziła się w 1963 roku w Południowej Karolinie, w rodzinie o głębokich muzycznych tradycjach — jako jedna z dziewięciu sióstr. Choć muzyka towarzyszyła jej od dziecka, śpiewać zawodowo zaczęła dopiero pod koniec lat 90. Jej debiutancki album, Call Me Miss Wanda, ukazał się w 2003 roku. Ale to trzy lata później, dzięki przełomowej płycie Natural Resource, jej talent naprawdę rozkwitł. Ten album przyniósł jej zaproszenie na jeden z najbardziej prestiżowych festiwali bluesowych na świecie — Pocono Blues Festival — gdzie krytycy okrzyknęli ją największym odkryciem weekendu. Rok później wystąpiła na legendarnym Chicago Blues Festival, zbierając równie entuzjastyczne reakcje publiczności.
I trudno się temu dziwić. Na scenie Wanda śpiewa z głębi serca i z naturalną lekkością, rozświetlając salę uśmiechem tak jasnym, że mógłby rozjaśnić najciemniejszą jaskinię. Zachwyca silnym, krystalicznie czystym głosem, wytrenowanym w kościele—tak nośnym, że często nie potrzebuje żadnych efektów, co niezmiennie zaskakuje realizatorów dźwięku. Jej autorskie piosenki zapadają w pamięć na długo po ostatnim dźwięku. A przede wszystkim: to jej otwarte serce i prawdziwa miłość do ludzi sprawiają, że publiczność natychmiast lgnie do niej — bez względu na to, czy mówi po angielsku, polsku, czy w jakimkolwiek innym języku.
Ta miłość i niezwykła więź, która rodzi się między Wandą a słuchaczami, zostały pięknie uchwycone podczas koncertu, z którego pochodzi ten album. Nagranie powstało w gościnnym pubie IBU Craft Beers w Gliwicach, wczesnym latem 2024 roku. Tego wieczoru Wandzia i jej zespół zaprezentowali bogaty patchwork autorskich utworów oraz kilka wyjątkowo dobranych coverów — wszystko wykonane z rzadko spotykanym połączeniem duszy, artyzmu i radości.
Dlaczego właśnie teraz ukazuje się Wandy album koncertowy — i dlaczego nagrany w Polsce? Przez lata stworzyła ona imponujący dorobek autorskich piosenek, znanych dotąd głównie w wersjach studyjnych. Ten album po raz pierwszy oddaje ich sceniczną energię i emocjonalną głębię. Ten wybór autorskich utworów urozmaica kilka wyjątkowych coverów, precyzyjnie przez Wandę wybranych, gdyż mają dla niej osobiste znaczenie. Ale jest też inny powód: choć znana na całym świecie jako South Carolina’s Lady of Rhythm, R&B i Soul Moving Music, Wanda stała się jakby trochę Polką. I to nie tylko dlatego, że uwielbia żurek czy że w jej domu wiszą zasłony przywiezione z Polski… ale dlatego, że naprawdę jest tu kochana. Fani wracają raz po raz — by ją usłyszeć, uściskać, a czasem… podzielić się z nią sekretem.
Ten album to dzieło miłości — dla wszystkich, którzy wzięli w nim udział. Również dla mnie. Bo Wanda kocha głęboko — i wszędzie tam, gdzie się pojawia, jest równie głęboko kochana.

The elimination of the $800 de minimis threshold means all merchandise shipments are now subject to customs duties, and the lack of clear processing procedures from US Customs has forced postal services worldwide – including Polish Post, as well as carriers from Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, and many other countries – to suspend standard parcel services to the US.
What this means for your order: We can currently ship CDs to the US only as registered letter mail (not as a package), which takes longer than usual delivery methods. Please expect extended delivery times of several weeks.

Evan Dehner - piano, back-up vocalsI first met Wanda on the day Barack Obama became president for the first time. It was also the day we embarked on our first tour together. Little did we know that, seventeen years and seven tours later — with tour number eight just around the corner — I’d be writing the liner notes to Wanda’s first-ever live album, recorded in Poland, of all places.
But for those who’ve followed Wanda’s journey since she first stepped onto Polish soil that November day in 2008, this may not come as a surprise. From the very beginning, she’s been winning over fans and friends, earning the affectionate nickname "Wandzia" along the way (a Polish diminutive of “Wanda”). We've traveled hundreds of kilometers together, spent long hours in vans, and crossed borders into multiple European countries. I’ve seen Wanda perform countless times — with different musicians, in venues big and small, for audiences speaking many different languages. Yet one thing always stays the same: Wanda touches people’s hearts wherever she goes, transcending language and culture with her music and her spirit.
She was born in 1963 in South Carolina, into a family steeped in musical tradition — one of nine sisters. Though music has been a part of her life since childhood, Wanda didn’t begin singing professionally until the late 1990s. Her debut album, "Call Me Miss Wanda", was released in 2003. But it was three years later, with the arrival of her breakout record "Natural Resource", that her talent truly took flight. That album earned her an invitation to one of the world’s most renowned blues events — the Pocono Blues Festival — where critics hailed her as the weekend’s biggest revelation. A year later, she took the stage at the iconic Chicago Blues Festival, and the response was just as ecstatic.
And it’s no wonder. On stage, Wanda delivers songs with deep soul and effortless style, lighting up the room with a smile so radiant it could brighten the darkest cave. She captivates with her strong, church-trained, and beautifully pristine voice — requiring almost no amplification and absolutely no sound effects, often catching sound engineers by surprise. Her songwriting stays with you long after the final note. Most of all, it’s her open heart and genuine love for people that draw audiences in — whether they speak English, Polish, or any language at all.
That love, and the special connection it creates between artist and audience, is beautifully captured in this live recording. It was made at the always-welcoming IBU Craft Beers Pub in Gliwice, Poland, in the early summer of 2024. That night, Wandzia and her bandmates delivered a rich patchwork of original songs and a few carefully chosen covers — performed with a rare blend of soul, artistry, and joy.
Why release a live album now — and from a club show in a Polish city? Over the years, Wanda has built a remarkable body of original work, most of which has only ever been recorded in the studio. This record finally brings that music to life on stage, capturing the raw energy and emotion of a live performance. She’s added a few special covers that hold deep meaning for her. And there’s another reason: though known around the world as South Carolina’s Lady of Rhythm, R&B, and Soul Moving Music, Wandzia has become, in some very real ways, part Polish. Not just because she loves "żurek" (a traditional Polish fermented rye soup), or because the curtains in her house are from Poland… but because she is genuinely loved by so many people here. Her fans keep coming back — again and again — eager to hear her, to hug her, and to share their secrets with her.
This record is a labor of love for everyone involved—including yours truly. Because Wanda is deeply loving — and deeply loved — everywhere she goes.
